How to Make Screen Time More Valuable

Children today are growing up in a world where screens are part of everyday life. Whether it's for schoolwork, entertainment, communication or creativity, technology isn't going away.

As parents, it's natural to worry about how much time children spend on phones, tablets and computers. But perhaps a more important question is not:

"How much screen time is my child having?"

Instead, ask:

"What is my child doing during that screen time?"

After teaching Computing Science for over 30 years, I've learned that there is an enormous difference between passive screen time and active screen time. Understanding that difference can completely change how we think about technology.

Passive vs Active Screen Time

Imagine two children each spend one hour on a computer. The first spends the hour endlessly scrolling through short videos. The second spends the hour designing a game, programming a robot or creating an animation. Both have had exactly the same amount of screen time. But they have had completely different experiences.

One has mainly consumed content. The other has created something.

What Is Passive Screen Time?

Passive screen time usually involves children simply receiving information without having to think very deeply.

Examples include:
• Endless social media scrolling
• Watching short-form videos
• Watching television for long periods
• Repetitive mobile games with little challenge

There is nothing wrong with relaxation and entertainment in moderation. We all need downtime. However, when most screen time is passive, children have fewer opportunities to develop creativity, problem-solving and independent thinking.

What Is Active Screen Time?

Active screen time encourages children to think, create and solve problems.

Examples include:
• Learning to code
• Designing games
• Programming robots
• Creating animations
• Digital art and graphic design
• Video editing
• Music production
• 3D modelling
• Building websites

These activities require children to make decisions, experiment, overcome challenges and develop new skills. Instead of simply consuming technology, they begin creating it.

Why Coding Is One of the Best Forms of Screen Time

Coding combines many valuable skills in one activity.

Children learn to:
• solve problems
• think logically
• be creative
• persevere when things go wrong
• improve their ideas
• communicate their thinking

Every project becomes an opportunity to learn. Unlike many forms of entertainment, coding constantly challenges the brain.

Technology Is a Tool

We often hear people say, "Children spend too much time on screens." Perhaps a better comparison is this. Nobody says, "My child spends too much time with pencils."

What matters is what they're creating. Technology is simply another tool. Used well, it allows children to design, invent, communicate and learn.

Helping Your Child Develop Healthy Digital Habits

Making screen time more valuable doesn't mean banning entertainment.

It means creating a healthy balance.

Some simple ideas include:
• Encourage children to create as often as they consume.
• Introduce coding, robotics or digital design alongside games and videos.
• Talk to your child about what they're doing online.
• Choose activities that require thinking and creativity.
• Celebrate effort and perseverance rather than simply completing a level or earning rewards.
• Enjoy technology together whenever possible.

Preparing Children for the Future

Technology will continue to shape almost every career. Whether children become doctors, engineers, scientists, architects, teachers or entrepreneurs, digital skills will become increasingly valuable. Learning how technology works gives children confidence to participate in that future rather than simply observe it.

It's About Balance

Technology is neither good nor bad. Like books, bicycles or television, its value depends on how it is used. Helping children make thoughtful choices about technology is far more valuable than simply counting the number of hours they spend on a screen.

When children use technology to create, solve problems and express their ideas, screen time becomes an opportunity to learn, grow and discover.

Conclusion

Rather than asking "How can I reduce my child's screen time?", perhaps the better question is:

"How can I make my child's screen time more meaningful?"

Coding is one of the most rewarding ways to achieve that. It encourages children to become creators, inventors and problem-solvers while developing skills that will benefit them throughout school and into adult life. Instead of simply watching the digital world, they begin shaping it.
